Mikhail Red is one of the most recognized filmmakers in contemporary Philippine cinema and the current Chief Creative Officer of Evolve Studios, a production company focused on Filipino genre film. His work, including Birdshot (2016), Eerie (2018), and Deleter (2022)—the highest-grossing horror film in Philippine history—has drawn on genre storytelling to explore social and psychological themes. In interviews, Red has also spoken directly about how his own background as a gamer continues to inform his approach to filmmaking.

Speaking to Spin.ph in October 2024, Red described a gaming history that runs deep and wide. “I’ve played so many different genres of games, some competitive like DOTA, CounterStrike, in internet cafes with friends after school. I also play a lot of looter shooters and MMOs like Destiny and Star Wars: The Old Republic,” he said. “But the game with the most playtime is probably Diablo 2, I’ve played since OG Battle.net days and have continued with the franchise in D2 Resurrected and Diablo 4.” He also revealed a lesser-known side of his gaming background: “Outside of PC and console, I also play a lot of Magic: the Gathering. I was once part of the national team that competed for the World Magic Cup in France.”

That connection to Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo franchise later became professional. Red directed “Diablo Immortal: The Druid,” a live-action short film produced for the game, bringing his lifelong fandom directly into his filmmaking work.

Red’s most direct engagement with gaming culture came with Friendly Fire, released in Philippine cinemas on October 23, 2024. The film follows Hazel, played by Loisa Andalio, an internet café employee who becomes an overnight esports sensation after a standout performance in the game Project Xandata, and is recruited by a team founder played by Coleen Garcia. The cast also includes Yves Flores, Harvey Bautista, and Bob Jbeili.
To ground the film in an authentic local setting, Red’s team worked directly with Secret6, the Filipino studio behind Project Xandata, led by creator Gene Gacho, giving the production access to the actual game engine and assets. Speaking at ToyCon PH 2024, Red described the project in personal terms: “Personal din siya because it combines two of my passions, gaming and film making.” In an earlier interview with Variety at the 2023 Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema, he described it as a departure from his usual work: “It’s not your usual crime thriller that most of my films are, it’s something fresh for me and exciting. I like to think of it as my most wholesome project, because it’s more inspirational and it’s a genre I’ve always wanted to try—the sports movie and the underdog sports story.”

Red has also spoken about the challenges of representing esports on screen. “Esports is becoming quite big, especially in the Philippines, and there’s this stigma and the lack of support,” he told Variety. “It’s just interesting to follow the lives of these esports athletes who are handicapped in terms of resources, support, and even internet speed and lag.”

Red’s next project, Lilim, marks his first collaboration with his father, cinematographer Raymond Red, with his brother Nikolas Red writing the screenplay. Set during the Martial Law era in the Philippines in 1983, the film follows siblings Issa and Tomas as they flee after a violent act of self-defense and take refuge in a remote orphanage where something is clearly wrong. The film, starring Heaven Peralejo, Eula Valdez, and Ryza Cenon, is set for release in March 2025.

Across a filmography that spans crime thrillers, horror, and now sports drama, Red’s gaming background has become a consistent thread—one he speaks about openly as both a personal passion and a creative influence, whether the games themselves appear on screen or shape the way he builds tension and character.
