MANILA – Barangay Ginebra secured their fourth win in six games after beating Blackwater, 112-98, in the 2024 PBA Governors’ Cup on Tuesday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Scottie Thompson’s all-around triple-double performance of 21 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds was key to the Gin Kings’ victory, despite Blackwater putting up a good fight early on.
Thompson sparks Ginebra with triple-double magic
Seven-time PBA champion Scottie Thompson was on fire, notching a triple-double that proved too much for Blackwater. Ginebra was almost in trouble when their 17-point lead shrank to just three in the third quarter, but Thompson, together with Maverick Ahanmisi, knocked down crucial threes to give them breathing room heading into the final quarter.
Ginebra pulls away in the final stretch
In the fourth quarter, Ginebra stretched their lead to 19 points, leaving Blackwater with no chance to catch up. Thompson re-entered the game in the last three minutes and capped his performance with an offensive rebound in the dying seconds to complete his triple-double.
Coach Tim Cone highlights intensity
Head coach Tim Cone admitted that the team needed an attitude adjustment after being upset by Blackwater earlier in the conference. “We talked about it – we needed to come out with more intensity,” Cone said. The players responded, with Justin Brownlee contributing 20 points and 3 blocks, alongside solid support from RJ Abarrientos, Stephen Holt, and Japeth Aguilar.
Blackwater’s effort comes up short
Blackwater fought hard, but the loss dropped them to a 3-4 record. George King had a big night with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists, while Troy Rosario chipped in 18 points. Unfortunately, their efforts weren’t enough to stop Ginebra’s strong fourth-quarter surge.
